Mishegoss

Cidu Bill on Nov 20th 2008

According to Newsweek magazine, one of Hillary Clinton’s staffers told one of the magazine’s reporters during the primaries that everybody after a certain point everybody was “fed up with the Bill Clinton mishegoss.”

This word has always been a part of my personal vocabulary, but does the quote make any sense to most of Newsweek’s audience? I’ve noticed that New York City-based magazines and (to an even larger extent) Hollywood screenwriters seem convinced that the entire country is familair with Yiddish (which I suppose, if these magazines and screenwriters keep using it, might eventually be the case).

The second strip (Jump Start) is also a CIDU: Doesn’t Jojo win the race if he runs into the tree before his friend gets there? A pyrrhic victory to be sure, but even so…

Curl Up and Laugh

This doesn’t strictly qualify for the Synchronicity File, since the comics appeared two days apart (Brevity on Friday and Monty on Sunday), but I’m going to stretch the rules a bit because, well… curling

Sacrilegious Synchronicity

Cidu Bill on Nov 17th 2008

L.B. Wylie: I’m generally confused by how Christians seem to be one of the only groups of any sort (religious, ethnic, or otherwise) who are always fair game, and are flatly characterized as uptight and oversensitive and humorless if we don’t laugh at whatever jokes are made about us – especially when the majority of the “jokes”, which some could characterize as sacrilegious or heresy, come from those outside of the faith… Resorting to unprovoked cheap (and not even very funny) jokes about someone else’s savior seems to me to potentially be an even lower form of humor than puns. Humor based on pretty much anything else about a religion but the savior is fair game as far as I’m concerned, but – in a culture where the Braves mascot was deemed inexcusably offensive – I think Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, etc. deserve the same respect.

I have to think this was a blown punchline, because Express Mail is in fact a service provided by the Post Office. What Batiuk probably meant for Funky to say was “I’ll FedEx it to you.”

And perhaps in the eventual paperback collection, he will.

Pregnant Pause

How old is this girl supposed to be? Even if she’s not a seventh grader herself, if she’s in the same school as a seventh grader, she has to be at least in the fifth grade (depending on how the school district is set up; more likely sixth grade). For a ten-or-eleven-year-old to be this ignorant would require the school to have an abstinence-only teaching policy so severe that even Sarah Palin would disapprove and a mother who’s too repressed to have ever discussed sex with her daughter — and if there’s one thing Eve isn’t, it’s repressed.
