The Wineforders have one of those dick-size-war Christmas light displays, apparently.

Yes, one of those displays that proclaims “Good Will to All Men”, while they cause everyone with epilepsy within a mile to go into seizure.

In Albuquerque it used to be the Bugg house
took a court order to move them out of the city completely

there must be a house in every city, not it has been moved

i’ve never seen it, but I hear it is amazing

Yeah, I think the Winefordners may go a LITTLE overboard with the electric Christmas lights, and animatronic reindeer, and human-sized inflatable snowglobe with the waving Santa inside. All those things that make the electric company so happy, and that I seem to see more and more of every year.

I understand the cartoon. the welding glasses?! not so much.

ps I used to work in a card store, and it still annoys me (as it did then) when people state that the greeting card companies “invented” any holidays. It’s true that the greeting card companies capitalize on these holidays, BUT there is not a single one (as far as I can tell) that any greeting card company “invented”.

Them Christmas lights is so bright, you need welding goggles just to look at em’

This strip, posted 11-28-2008 is dated 12-21 (2007). Did we understand it when it ran last year?

In my neighborhood there’s a house like the Winefordners’. One of the many electric light decorations says “Pepco loves us,” Pepco being the local power company.

Yep — everyone else has pretty much nailed it

I get the ‘lights are too bright’ gag, but what is “Sweetest Day”? I’ve never heard of that…

  13. fuzzmaster Nov 28th 2008 at 10:56 am 13

#11 heather — It’s a Midwestern thing. (And not all of the Midwest, either). Wikipedia says:

The origin of Sweetest Day is frequently attributed to candy company employee Herbert Birch Kingston as an act of philanthropy.[4] However, Bill Lubinger, a reporter for The Plain Dealer, contends that “Dozens of Cleveland’s top candy makers concocted the promotion 84 years ago and it stuck, although it never became as widely accepted as hoped.”

Ooten, I didn’t use it last year: I didn’t see it until after Christmas, so I decided to just hang onto it until this year.

The neighbors across the street are like this. They already have their light sup. We used to be “that house” during Halloween, though, but we toned it down.

I feel bad for the family that had to take their display down. I would be disgusted if that happened to any of the houses around here that do it. Granted I also don’t live next to them. I am more likely to be one of them. I would probably go all out for Halloween if I owned a house.

I too didn’t get the part about the welding glasses until Rusty explained that part.

It makes me sad to read some of the comments (especially the first).

I’m planning on a big light display this season. It has nothing to do with competition. I loves Christmas lights, my family loves Christmas lights, and I *think* other people do too.

  18. Cidu Bill Nov 28th 2008 at 04:53 pm 18

Yes, Lorraine, it was indeed the “welding goggles” that lost me.

  19. Adam F Nov 28th 2008 at 05:59 pm 19

The welding goggles are for shielding your eyes from the Winefordners’ incredibly bright display.

  20. Adam F Nov 28th 2008 at 06:01 pm 20

Oops, it appears my eyes glazed over Rusty’s explanation.

I can’t wait for this one to start this year!

    The neighbors there love it!

We have a house like that near here. They love doing it, people love going to see it, the neighbors have accepted it and pitch in on helping put the lights/displays up and take them down. The family puts out huge bins for food donations for the food bank and pet food for the local animal shelter.
