His Better Half

Not a CIDU, per se, but I was just wondering… Why exactly is Heart’s mother surprised in the fourth panel? What did she think Dean was going to say?

His answer definitely shouldn’t have been a surprise. She MIGHT have had that startled look if he’d answered, “A hooker,” but that definitely ain’t gonna happen. This strip might have worked better if that frame had been just her reaction shot as the answer naturally occurred to her, without Dean or his answer.

Is there really any reason to assume that they would be costuming as a pair? Heart could have been anything, really…her costume doesn’t HAVE to complement Dean’s.

I agree with jayjaybear, unless it is a family tradition that they wear complimentary costumes, there is no reason to assume that Heart would be dressing as a hooker.

The question I have is why isn’t mom equally shocked that Dean is going as a pimp? Being a pimp is OK but a hooker isn’t ?? That makes no sense

Notice Heart’s “hooker” shoes are her Mom’s

I liked this idea better in the dailies, I think Monday? Less panels and more to the point, but we don’t get Heart on Sundays so we missed this one.

    Nicole -

I don’t know this strip but is Dean her son? The first panel shows what I assume is a doorbell ringing, implying Dean doesn’t start in the house.

Yeah, Dean is a neighbor kid.

Is suggesting a rewrite of the word balloons ever done here? Because it would be so easy to fix the comic.

After Dean says “I’m the pimp….” The Mom could say “Wait. You’re a pimp?” Then in the next panel (the bottom half), Dean could say “Yeah, it matches Heart’s costume.”

Considering it’s Friday, I assume this is a rerun? Because yeah, Tatulli did almost this same gag (abbreviated) on Monday.

Powers - The date on this is 10/24. It’s a Sunday strip, so it’s apparently not from this year, since last Sunday was the 26th. The last time October 24 fell on a Sunday was 2004.

I didn’t know pimps had better _halves_.

Keera, I’m willing to accept the premise that Dean, being 7 years old, isn’t entirely clear on the concept.

    Best Heart strip ever!

If the glasses were bigger, Dean COULD have said “Elton John.”

I just find it hilarious that this strip got past the syndicate’s radar. Due to the (actual or perceived) conservatism of newspaper comics readers, most syndicated strips still have content standards that were outdated by 1960.
