If the joke is what I think it is, the set-up is wrong.
He makes a big point that he likes pie rather than cake. But,
when offered cake, he isn’t about to say no. However, the
set-up doesn’t suggest that that he wouldn’t prefer cake to
nothing.
The only redeeming (possible) humor is that he professes his
non-existent love of cake to make sure he gets some.

The cake is a lie!

Cake or Death?
Cedar Oct 29th 2008 at 12:44 am 4
I’m assuming the older woman is his mother, and he’s not quite able to stand up to his mom/let her know who the REAL him is. The way the other woman (his wife) is looking over her shoulder at the conversation has me assuming that she knows about his feelings toward pie, and is surprised at his response.

I agree with Cedar, except I think that’s his wife’s mother, not his (which means a> she’s less likely to know about his professed love of pie and b> he wants to please her to please his wife). I also agree with Arthur - it’s a pretty weak joke because of a weak setup.

Yeah, that’s his mom. Who can stand up to mom? (ha)

Kit — Cake …. No death … Cake
Hmmmm — I thought it was a comment on how readyly we compromise ourselves and settle instead of holding out for what we really want.

I agree with Nicole on what the cartoonist’s intent was, but I’m also with everyone else, that it’s presented rather weakly. I would also choose pie over cake, given a choice between the two, but that doesn’t mean that I’d turn down a nice piece of cake.
I also feel kind of sorry for the guy, if he’s so shallow that feels his choice of pie vs. cake is one of the important defining characteristics of who he is.

I think the key is in the line “I love cake!”. He’s trying to say that you either love pie or cake, not both, but he switches when presented cake.
Yeah, the presentation could be a bit better, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it doesn’t work at all.

Potential twist on what has already been discussed: “It’s important to know you are”, in this case, a guy who is considerate to his mother’s/mother-in-law’s feelings. Despite his pronouncement in panels 1-3, being a “pie guy” is ultimately *not* what defines him.

Off on a tangent:

and yes, they do sell those shirts.
DPWally Oct 29th 2008 at 02:39 pm 12
It looks to me like the first 3 panels are him now, the last is him as a child. Doesn’t explain the joke, though.

“Let them eat cake.”
docbob Oct 29th 2008 at 06:36 pm 14
@Adam
Yup, the cake is a lie…..
Kit Oct 29th 2008 at 09:01 pm 15
But it’s so delicious and moist . . .
Dan Oct 30th 2008 at 08:32 am 16
DPWally: But isn’t that his wife behind him in the last panel?
Lola Oct 30th 2008 at 10:45 am 17
It looks like he’s talking to himself in the first panels…kind of a pep talk. But when it comes to time to act on his princples, he caves. And why not. The choice isn’t between pie and genocide. It’s cake. Just because his preference is pie, doesn’t mean he hates cake. And just for the record, where exactly is this “cake or pie world?” Heck, give me a piece of both!
Charles Oct 30th 2008 at 02:03 pm 18
He’s a pie guy, but who turns down Mom’s cake? (or Mother-in-law)
But - I immediately thought of “That 70s Show”. Donna tells Eric she loves him, and all he can say is, “I love … cake!”
(caveat - I know this from my kids …)
Rasheed Oct 30th 2008 at 03:07 pm 19
And where does cheesecake fit into all this???
Eric Herboso Oct 30th 2008 at 03:10 pm 20
I actually think Adam got it right. My initial thought on this punchline was: “The cake is a lie!”

Whenever I read this cartoon,I think that the man’s little neck is the white of a clerical collar, so I’m always expecting a “preistly” or “pastoral” comment from him. Then I read it and realize that it isn’t.
