"But wow, asking a sarcastic question like that of someone who serves you drinks and/or food seems a little unwise. I used to waitress, and I saw somw ugly stuff happen when people offended servers."

Sadly, my wife and I were eating at a favorite restaurant one Sunday, when we had the worst service we ever had from any restaurant... dirty utensils, cold food, and finally topped off with a hair in my breakfast potatoes. We had had enough. We complained to the manager, then left without paying. As we were heading for the door, the manager actually asked us if we wanted a coupon for a free dinner. Just what we wanted, a free dinner... complete with all the extra bodily fluids we would never ask for.

I was foggy about whether this was 1 strip or 2. It made more sense to me as 1 strip so I decided that such was the case.

I think you're supposed to read the top and bottom strips in parallel. Top left, then bottom left, ... finishing at the bottom right. Sort of like the top strip is a commentary or narration for the bottom strip. (Yeah, I realize it's all one Sunday strip.)

Jordan: The other day I saw a guy doing food samples at Wal-Mart, who had a huge bushy beard...he was wearing a hairnet on top of his head and a second one over his face.

Read the first panel. It talks about how much people "value" hair. The mom, as shown in the last panel, makes extra money off her hair and the threat of it winding up in coffee. Lame joke, terrible execution.

Funny, Jordan, I was less confused when I thought it was two separate strips.

If we're looking at two strips, then the bottom one is a simple "bad service" joke that is reasonably funny. Customer didn't tip last time, and got hair in his coffee as revenge, so now he's asking how much he has to tip to avoid a repeat. The top strip just lacks a punchline.

But as one strip, I have absolutely no idea what this is supposed to be. The utter nonsequiturity ruins any humor there could possibly have been.

Oh, that's all one big strip? I thought it was two separate strips. It makes a bit more sense now.

On another note, I work at a coffee shop, and we have these magic devices called HAIRNETS to keep the coiffe out of the coffee.

James, yes big snarly hair hurts when your mom comes at you with a brush (and then scissors to cut the snarls out)! I initially just read the last four panels and thought it was funny. The first four just seem like a long setup to the joke.

yebbut ... 2nd panel "Mommy ... it hurts."
What hurts? Is this the sort of thing typical american daughters say?

Not "Mommy, can I borrow your hairdryer"
or "Mommy, can I have a lift to the mall"
