One of Dostoevsky’s books is called “Notes from Underground,” in which the narrator is a misanthropic jackass who is self-loathing and self-aggrandizing at the same time. I don’t really remember the context of that particular line, but I think the idea is that Bucky is comparing himself to a real grotesque and that it’s actually fitting.
