Monty Python was wayyyyyy ahead of strip #3.

That kind of thing makes me wonder if people unconsciously recycle old gags (both theirs and from other people/artists). We all remember the Dagwood gag with him hanging out the window, copied almost verbatim from a Blondie strip from the 50’s, but sometimes this kind of thing appears to be unintentional-the artist forgot the original joke (in this case, the Python skit with the superspy Pope), or perhaps never saw it in the first place.

RRRRR-try to make a quick edit before the “send comment” command processes, and I get a double-post…

The Monty Python sketch was about a Bishop, though, wasn’t it?

Oh, man! I can’t remember! All I can think about now is the skit with the Church Police!

There’s also a Battle Pope comic which was reprinted through Image recently. :)

The Python sketch was indeed about a Bishop. My recollection is that the Python sketch was more of a send-up of a show along the lines of “The Avengers” or perhaps more apropos, “The Saint”. While not totally original, this strip is undoubtedly targeting “Batman”, specifically playing off “Popemobile/Batmobile”, and the signal in the night sky.

As I now go back and re-watch “The Bishop” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UieDo4GoRPE ), I am indeed struck by the similarities, particularly the way the crosier is rendered and that the cross logo in the “opening credits” of “The Bishop” does have a marked similarity to the one in the strip (though I guess all crosses are pretty similar)

Also, it should be pointed out that the Pope is Catholic while “The Bishop” was Anglican.

Can someone explain Narcissus in the desert. (He drowned looking at himself in the water hole? - Spent the rest of his life admirering himself in the water hole?) Neither pithy or funny.

I suspect Narcissus was so busy admiring his reflection, he didn`t want to spoil it by taking a drink, and thus died of thirst.

What does #2 even mean? It makes no sense at all.

I haven’t seen the film, but neither of the robots is speech-specialized - I suspect that the only line either of them has is the other’s name. So carrying that down a few years…

“Directive” was also spoken by the robots, and maybe a few other minor words, but yes, their dialogue in the film was much as presented in the strip, but with more emotion.

On that note, though, what do you mean you haven’t seen it? It was one of the best movies of the summer!

I guess you have to have seen WallE to understand that one.

I like the way Wall-E has his hand in his “pants” à la Al Bundy.

Well, a comic with the name “Pop Culture Comics” can probably be expected to be based on details found in the pop culture sources it uses.

That said, go see WALL*E, for Pete’s sake. It’s a great movie.

I love narcissus - so vain he spent nearly all his life traipsing through the desert to find a watering hole in which he could admire himself- only to collapse! Loved that one and the pope mobile. The others were forgettable.
