If good clean water kills the Wicked Witch of the West, maybe nasty, vile CO2 kills the Good Witch of the North (”North” as in the Artic ice cap).

I think Sol’s got it. C02 is a greenhouse gas, so it melts the north. Scarecrow and Tin Man are shocked that no one explained to Dorothy what a huge carbon footprint she was creating.

Oh my God, Dorothy has finally snapped! Her bloodlust can never be sated! Sure, it starts with a couple of wicked witches, but a ‘good’ witch may turn wicked at any moment, best to eliminate the threat before it can do any damage.

But then, what of those kept alive by magical means? Are they really any better than the witches? Scarecrow and Tin Man see emptiness in their former compatriot’s eyes, despite her innocent expression. They stare in horror as their future melts like the screaming puddle spreading before them, and there’s no more wonderful wizard with whom they might seek sanctuary.

These are dark times in Oz as the brutal reign of Dorothy the Destroyer is about to begin…

In the movie, Glinda was the good witch of the north. So why does the witch melting look like the wicked witch of the west?

Shouldn’t the puddle of melting witch be pink and sparkly with a tiara and magic wand?

Thats the CIDU here for me.

What Nathan said. Add to that the improbability of having a bucket of liquid CO2.

She did not have a bucket of LIQUID CO2 — she had an empty bucket of “air” which contains a lot of CO2. That is, she went through the motions of emptying a bucket of nothing at the Good Witch of the North, killing her (by mistake).

I read it as CO2 being an alternative fire extinguisher payload to H2O; each is used for putting out different types of fires. So why not different ‘extinguishers’ for ‘putting out’ different types of witches?

The ice-caps thing makes plenty of sense too.

Nathan got it right, Glinda is all white and shimmery, not black with a pointed hat. Also a bucket of CO2 would be so cold it would hurt Dorothy’s hand if any touched her.

Perhaps part of the joke is that the only way to have concentrated C02 in a bucket is for it to be DRY ice.

Whereas, it was wet water that killed the Wicked Witch of the West.

But mainly, it’s a global warming joke.

Actually, carbon dioxide is more dense than air, so you could have a bucket of CO2 that could be thrown over a witch. You’d have to have a lid on it while carrying it to here, though, since it will diffuse away, but it could be done.

Sulphur hexafluoride is an even more dense gas, and there are some neat videos of it on youtube. Like this one:

Yup, greenhouse gases and global warming.

    Little Willy was a chemist;
    Little Willy is no more.
    What he thought was H20
    Was H2SO4.

It was actually a very emotional scene. By the time it was over, there wasn’t a dry ice in the house.
