My Own Comics List

Cidu Bill on Aug 14th 2008

since i was asked…

Comics I Like So Much, I Would Actually Buy a Newspaper If I Had To

Comics I Read Every Day and If I’m Out of Town For a Few Days I’ll Make Sure I Hit the Archives to Make Sure I Haven’t Missed Any

*range from CIDU to Ewww to Arlo; can be very NSFW

Comics My Doctor Would Rather I Not Read for the Sake of My Blood Pressure

  • For Better or For Worse and Funky Winkerbean — both of these could be high-quality strips, and have been high-quality strips, but clearly suffer from writer burn-out

And Then There’s

  • Stuck Funky, where readers decontruct Funky Winkerbean so I don’t have to

Please Note:

  • I’m sure I managed to leave out out some comics that should be on this list
  • Most of these comics are available through the Houston Chronicle (Monday through Saturday only) or at Go Comics (formerly known as UComics)
  • I generally read a couple dozen comics every day in addition to these favorites. Please remember that I am a professional, and you should not attempt this at home.

    No PBS??!?

I love Heart of the City too! It’s one of my top ten favs, but it doesn’t seemed to get talked about much, either here or at other comics blogs.

I’ve been having problems with the Chron site lately–it just doesn’t load about 75% of the time, regardless of what computer I am using. Has anyone else had this problem?

On my “must read” list, I would add to your list:

    cul de sac
    cow and boy
    watch your head
    candorville
    barkeater lake
    toby
    brewster rockit
    pooch cafe
    get fuzzy
    pearls before swine

(and likely others I’m forgetting). There’s at least half a dozen I’d drop from your list…

Cedar - Right now, none of the color comics are loading at the Chron’s website. And I’m way too lazy to look for them all right now.

I agree with 1 & 3 above: How could you leave out Pearls Before Swine?

Get Fuzzy, too. Although it is somewhat inconsistent, it’s often LOL.

What about Stone Soup? Just kidding.

Should you add a category for Comics Your Doctor Doesn’t Understand (Why You Insist on Reading Them)?

Thanks for the list. Some new ones for me here!

@Size: …and by “Doctor” you mean “Psychiatrist”. ;-)

What about xkcd? Smart, funny, sometimes poignant. Very good strip.

It’s fine for y’all to add your own recommendations to the list, but I’m not going to comment on why I didn’t include specific comics. Chacun à son goût and all that, but no good purpose is served by my explaining why certain comics don’t appeal to me.

Justme, Stone Soup actually was supposed to have been on my list, and I’ve added it on.

There’s a trick to getting the color comics to display on the Chron page. If you go to the main comics page (http://www.chron.com/apps/comics/showComics.mpl), you will see a link that says “Can’t open color comics?” It will lead you to a page that tells you what settings to change in your browser to get the color comics to show….
Also, go here for another custom comics page:

I’ve actually been wondering if gocomics is actually licensed to reproduce the strips it does. There’s some things about it that make me suspicious.

FBOFW - They did it; they gave grandpa a heart attack on Elizabeth and Anthony’s wedding day. I thought you all had been overstating the strip’s descent. Oh well, there’s still time to be surprised.

  13. Big Julie Aug 22nd 2008 at 04:49 am 13

Oh, I’m surprised, Kevin. They have Elly and her brother, Jim’s kids, JOKING about whether he’s dead or not at the funeral.

Lynn has gone beyond the pale.

Thanks for the list, Bill. I bookmarked several of these that I didn’t know. I now have even more ways to waste time. Not, though: STUCK FUNKY analyzes, critiques, & comments on FUNKY WINKERBEAN. STUCK FUNKY doesn’t deconstruct it.

    I know I’m chiming in late here…

I can’t believe nobody is mentioning my all-time favorite web comic, Order Of The Stick (first strip: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html). Granted it started out as a strip for D&D players, but it is quite comprehensible (and funny!) to people who have never played D&D. Even my parents like it (and I’m pretty sure they think D&D is evil)!
