Paris Hilton on John McCain
Cidu Bill on Aug 6th 2008
- This was her response to McCain’s ad comparing Barack Obama to celebrities such as Britney Spears and Hilton, and it’s funnier than I’d have expected Paris Hilton to be.

Does anybody actually CARE what Paris Hilton has to say? She should just shut up and stay out of the media’s eye. Blonde and dumb. Same goes for Britney. Ugh….

Ordinarily I’d agree; but in this case, McCain’s the one who made her a part of the campaign. To be fair, that gave her the right to comment, and hers was a lot more clever than his.
Which, you know, should be somewhat of an embarrassment to him.

OMG, that was actually really funny… cool…

Geez, Dave, did you even watch the video? My respect for her, or at least whichever one of her handlers came up with the idea, just shot up a notch or two.
Spoiled and rich beyond belief she may be, but give her credit for seeming to know what her actual place in society is.

Paris is extremely shallow, but she’s never been “stupid.” Everything she’s ever done, she did with a conscience. That makes her “evil,” not “dumb.”

Just goes to show that someone with nothing to lose can afford to say something rational that would annoy all the lobbies. However, Paris (or the masterminds) skipped the fact that she won’t be able to run until 2016.

Powers - Yes, I watched the video. But even she should know that she couldn’t become president until she was 35. I guess she was not at school that day when they taught that?

I think Dave didn’t get the joke.
Basically - she completely agrees with you about her fitness for being involved in politics. Her ad draws attention to that fact and questions why John McCain would make her part of his campaign (by including her in HIS ad) in the first place.
And she did all that while keeping a sense of humor about herself.
I’m actually impressed that she responded at all.

Wow, that was clever, and even included a sensible energy policy.
It looks like she understands how ridiculous her fame is and has developed a sense of humor about it, that’s the first time I’ve seen/heard something about her I can respect. Maybe she’ll follow in the footsteps of Pamela Lee, who’s always seemed to share the joke about her claim(s) to fame.

BTW, she’s famous for being famous. Clearly she has, or is, a brilliant publicist.

I always find it a little weird when someone responds to a satirical statement in which virtually everything is wrong, by triumphantly pointing out something wrong (Dave Barry often got angry letters correcting his “Mister Language Person” column). Dave, you are correct that she cannot become president until she’s 35. But why do you not point out that it’s a stupid idea to paint the White House pink?
Mark in Boston Aug 6th 2008 at 12:55 pm 12
It would still be the White House even if she paints it pink. The green room in a concert hall isn’t always green.

Until I saw this video yesterday I had never heard Paris Hilton, nor wanted to. But I’d heard of her and then only as irritating background noise that couldn’t be avoided. That is a blisteringly amazing come back to McCain’s ad and boggles my mind because I’d assumed that she was a true blue ditz. Now I think maybe there’s been a whole lot more acting going on than has been portrayed and she’s just never seen a reason to set anyone straight before. NEVER thought I’d say this, but….Paris, you go girl!
Mark M Aug 6th 2008 at 04:40 pm 14
Lola, I’d say “true blue ditz” is still more accurate. This was not her idea but instead came from a website co-founder, namely the Funny or Die website. He wrote the sketch, asked if she would do it, and she agreed. The most impressive part about it was that she memorized her lines.
HM Aug 6th 2008 at 06:30 pm 15
Mark M–I give her a little more credit than that, in that not only did she agree to do it and memorize her lines, she apparently thought it was really funny. I think seeing the humor in it says a lot for her intelligence. Maybe she’s not smart enough to write it herself, but she’s smart enough to get it and enjoy it–so somewhere between “true blue ditz” and really smart–like most of the rest of us are whether we like to admit it or not!
Cidu Bill Aug 6th 2008 at 06:32 pm 16
How many actors write their own material anyway?
Mark in Boston Aug 6th 2008 at 07:48 pm 17
Ummm … memorizing lines is what actors do. Why are you impressed about that? It’s like being impressed that she’s wearing makeup — the other thing that actors do.
Lola Aug 6th 2008 at 09:13 pm 18
Mark in Boston, yes, that’s what actors do. And running fast is what sprinters do, painting and sculpting is what artists do. I can’t do any of those things in a manner that anyone would want to see and neither can most people. What she did, even if it was just memorizing and reciting lines written by someone else, she did well and strongly suggests talent and discernment. I’m laughing because I can’t believe I’m championing her, but there it is.

Think of it as LEGALLY BLONDE III with Paris playing Reese.
A few smiles and platitudes but as LB II falls short of the original, LB III plumets further.

I’ve been watching Paris Hilton’s BFF. Where do they get these folks? They are from another planet!
