Yeah, females do mark, mostly when they are in heat, but there are some exceptionally aggressive females that do it all the time. We had one years ago (a little beagle if you can believe it) that would have put any dog to shame the way she vigilantly patroled and protected her fifedom. Whether marking or not, they all leave a lot of info wherever they "go." I guess the point is that dogs interact on such a "sensual" level that their markings are like conversations to them. For instance, they can tell what the other's been eating, if they are not feeling well, infected with worms, etc. If I ever had any doubt, this alone makes me glad I'm not a dog....if somebody's got worms, that's TMI for me!

Female dogs definitely do mark. That said, I do think this is an Irene reference.

Yo know, if the dog had simply said "an old friend," this wouldn't be a problem at all.

So he either had “relations” with the hydrant, or he smells the pee of a female dog he used to be invovled with. But female dogs don’t mark territory, or do they?

This only makes sense with Steve's information. However, we have an intact bitch, and our non-intact male dog does not show his affection in the way that he marks every bush around. It is way too interactive for a p-mail conversation. So, someone is misinterpreting the action of dogs.

Yeah, I'd say this would make a whole lot more sense if he was talking to, say, someone's leg instead of a hydrant.

DIdn't Buckles have a "relationship" with a hydrant named Irene? Brought "her" flowers and gifts and became quite upset when other dogs paid attention to her. I can't tell if this is Irene (all hydrants look alike to me) but perhaps Buckles has a string of ex-girlfriends up and down his usual walk route.
