Who

Yesterday’s Days of Thunder, by popular demand. The consensus seems to be that figuring out who the man is will lead to an explanation, while Lola adds: “He’s ‘lovelied’ up a piece of sod by putting a bow on it and it’s some kind of a pet since it has a leash. You know, like sod could run in the road and get hit. It’s so sad when that happens.

Hmmm… looks like a golfer… actually it seems pretty close to Padraig Harrington. I don’t know if this refers to some specific incident at this year’s British Open, or just a tribute because he won. Maybe one could say he owns the turf?

Given his attire, my first thought is that this is a golfer, and the sod he is holding is a divot.

Is that supposed to be Tiger Woods, perhaps?

My first thought was it was a jockey, holding a bridle. Can’t reconcile that with a hunk of sod, though. sorry :’)

Although it certainly looks like sod, my first thought was “chia pet”.

Could it be a tennis player? I think whoever just won Wimbledon (sorry, can’t remember) wasn’t supposed to be so great on grass surfaces.

Does anyone else get the feeling that there are some artists out there submitting comics like this one just to see if they’ll get posted to CIDU?

I KNOW it’s a absurd notion… But can’t you just picture the artist sitting back in their chair… reading the comments… Bwahahaha!!!

I’m sticking with my story that this is the golfer Padraig Harrington. Here’s a photo with a similar smile:

I’m still sticking by my explanation that it’s the golfer Padraig Harrington. Check his smile in this photo:

Yeah, I’m stumped - I first though it was “people treat their lawns like pets”, lawns being mostly functionless, ornametal and wastefull. A symbol of American excess (but I freaking hate doing yardwork so that colors my opinion).

It does look like a jockey cap though - so “lawn jockey”? Those (often racist) lawn statues? Used to see them in the South, well into the 80’s (possibly still do some places). Even if that’s it though I don’t see what the joke is.

Can someone post some links to Lovely cartoons that are both funny and not CIDUs? I only ever see his stuff here and he seems to be the most obtuse of the bunch.

I was thinking Chia pet also.

    Re: #6 (Kelly)

You may not be far off. Several weeks ago someone here pointed out that the URL at the bottom of the DoT comics (robertlovely.com) did not exist. Now the comic shows a working address (rlovely.com). Coincidence?

Boy, I was off. I thought someone had scalped Nancy.

  13. Pinny Jul 30th 2008 at 05:33 pm 13

…and the new URL just started appearing 2 days ago! The timing is impeccable.

Lovely is not really bad. He just has a tendency to, occasionally, not explain what his intended punchline is. Like we are getting half the joke, or like some in-joke with a few select friends. I can only assume that the joke is more than “Hey, look, he dressed a piece of turf up as a pet! Isn’t he just crazy?”, since the man seems to be drawn in a way that I am supposed to recognise him.

The man looks vaguely like a skinny Norm McDonald, but that probably makes slightly less sense than the golf-pro.

Kelly, here’s the link I use.

I don’t know. I just had a flick through Lovely’s recent comics, and he seems to have a realist style of drawing faces - ie his generic faces are individual and detailed enough to look like they should be recognizable.
Consider the comic from July 24, for example - http://www.comics.com/comics/thunder/archive/thunder-20080724.html

Maybe that’s his lucky piece of turf, and he takes it with him so he can hit all his golf balls off of it… or he just loves it because he hit a good one off of it.. still pretty stupid. Or maybe this is supposed to be what Golfer’s keep as pets. Even stupider. Er, I don’t really know.

If a decent potential explanation falls in the forest and nobody listens, does it really exist?

  19. Hunt Jul 31st 2008 at 09:21 am 19

I think this is definitely a jockey, and the joke is somehow based on the word “turf,” which is often used to describe horse-racing.

The leather strap looks more like a rein to me than a leash (no release at the loop) so I like the “lawn jockey” explanation; it’s also makes me laugh. (Not that that’s a usual criteria for Lovely but it sure makes me think that that is the joke.)
It is true, however, that I can’t remember ever seeing a bow on a horse. (and boy, Googling just horse and bow does *not* get what we want here. :) )
