In a nutshell, he meant to say that calling an animal product "free range" is merely a feel-good marketing ploy; and that "free range" animals are no more free than - well, slaves. Not saying I necessarily agree with Piraro, but I also don't think that any reference to slavery is automatically offensive. The guys at the gym apparently don't like him or think (justifiably) that he is not too bright, so they have him wearing a shirt that only an idiot would wear anyway in such a way that he will get kicked in the gonads rather than the butt.
