For what it is worth, I was born in Morristown Memorial - did the CIDU web site do that specially for me? Did different newspapers use local names for the hospital?

I think you’re right - if she had started out asking what Arlo and his friends talked about, she should probably known what to expect. But in the first panel, she’s not thinking about Arlo at all; she’s only asking about her “innocent” but increasingly independent baby Gene.

Arlo’s ambiguous answers to her first two questions don’t satisfy her, so she tried to fill in the blanks with her own life experience.

Though Arlo seems reluctant to do so, the punch line is when he reminds her of what she should have already known: Gene and his friends are probably a lot more like Arlo and his friends were than like Janis and her friends were. Eventually, biology does have its say.

I just couldn’t find it plausible that Janis would speculate that the young Arlo and friends would speculate about what it would be like to be *married* to various girls.

Surely after 20+ years of marriage to Arlo, she must be familiar with the way his mind works. There’s a reason that certain comics on this site get relegated to the *Arlo* page, after all.

Charlene ~ didn’t you ever play MASH when you were a preteen or teenager? You know, that little paper game where you figure out a place to live (Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House,) a guy to marry, a car to drive and how many kids you were going to have? Or is that just a nutty American thing?

I suddenly seem very young, despite being older than Janis is supposed to be. We never talked, or even thought, about what a guy would be like as a husband at Gene’s age. Three or four years later after university, sure. But at 18?
