    Executions were the public spectacle of the day, like professional sports. The executioner is just doing the equivalent of mugging the camera.

    I agree with Dave, but also… Executioners wore the hoods so they would be anonymous. This guy’s actions kind of defeat that purpose.

    Or maybe it’s just funny that the executioner bellows out over the crowd like that at such a serious event.

    I like the analogy to a school play where one kid inevitably breaks character to shout into the crowd thinking his or her parents don’t see him or her.

    On a side note, his sleeves remind me of the Hamburglar.

    My paper has Herman on a regular basis, and I must say I’m surprised it doesn’t show up on this site more often. They’re like daily New Yorker cartoons. I’ll have to start submitting more often.
