In a guy’s world, there is no such thing as “just friends”. Janis thinks “just friends” means just that so she has no reason to worry. Arlo, on the other hand, realizes that if a guy likes a girl he is likely to want to sleep with her. There is no “just friends” in the guy world.

One of my teachers said if you have a boy, you have to worry about one boy. If you have a girl, you have to worry about MANY boys.

Men and women have different fears for thie kids. In this case, Janis is worried about Gene and the girl potentially sleeping together, but Arlo is worried that Genes likes the girl and may be heading down the slippery slope to love. I think Arlo would be less worried if Gene was having meaningless sex.

Arlo also missed the “just” in “just friends.” Janis’s reply without the “just” could easily result in Arlo’s confusion.
