1 Of 2 93-Year-Olds Charged In Manatee County Sex Sting

Manatee County has only two 93-year-olds, Frank. ;-)

Back to the matter at hand: How did this one slip pass the censors?

Would it be uncharitable of me to mention that the addition of Thorax ruined 9 Chickweed Lane for me?

Thorax definitely ruins the strip for me every time he appears, and this particular strip nearly caused me to poke out my own eyes. I think I’m going to go home now and curl up in the fetal position in the back of my closet and hum softly until the pain goes away.

I try to ignore all the strips with Thorax in them.

This strip isn’t carried in my local papers and it seems very strange - probably because I’m only seeing the ones that are hard to interpret, but still it seems to focus on ballet dancers and aliens? Is that really the gist of it?

Yeah, kinda. Thorax was a minor character — ballet dancer Edda’s grandmother’s eccentric and possibly extraterrestrial beau — who somehow muscled himself into taking over the strip for weeks at a time.

Wow. I thought I was the only one that hated Thorax! I read the strip online every day, but if I spy him when the page loads I instantly hit the back button. Sometimes I skip the strip altogether whenever they have one of those week long Thorax showcases.

Interesting. I can’t recall seeing anyone on line LIKE Thorax-centric 9CWL strips (although I did enjoy his guest shot in Pibgorn shortly before I totally lost interest in that strip.

I thought this would end up on the Arlo page for sure. I must be the only one that likes Thorax. I think he is a strange eccentric and esoteric addition.

I like a little surrealism in my day.

Sometimes I like Thorax a lot. Other times, like in this comic, I don’t at all. I think he’s at his best when commenting on the absurdities of our lives.

Thorax was fine when he was strange and eccentric. When he became weird, then absurd, is when 9CL jumped the proverbial shark.

I’m with you, Craig. I actually like Thorax.

Oh well, to each his own.

  14. Elliott Mar 27th 2008 at 01:24 pm 14

I also like Thorax. I hate the grandmother, however.

It’s gotta be love ’cause taint her looks. :-(

  16. Schist Happens Mar 28th 2008 at 03:04 pm 16

I love the grandmother because she reminds me so much of one of my own grandmothers. Nana used to drive me up the wall, so I can relate to the character. Of course the only reason I find it humorous is that it’s not happening to me!

Bill, I’m so glad I can come here and read what people have to say about 9CL. I found this site last year when looking for a 9CL community, just to discuss other weirdness in the strip.

My like of Thorax comes and goes, although from reading Brooke’s LiveJournal it seems that Thorax is just an extension of Brooke’s earlier attempts at cartooning with “Wahoo Terminal.” So at this point Thorax seems like par for the course, or a necessary evil in the strip.

Also going to have to agree with Carl’s on totally losing interest in Pibgorn. Whoops.

I enjoy Thorax, but I only came to the strip recently, so I didn’t know it before he moved into the prominence hs has now.

I found Pibgorn so totally incomprehensible that I only read it for a few days–and that was years ago. Thorax is too smug and estoeric for my taste–even if he is some sort of omniscient, time-travelling energy being who condescends to join us humans just long enough to point out our absurdities. We’ve got Jerry Seinfeld for that…

…on the other hand, this strip has the best-drawn females this side of Liberty Meadows.
