Dirty Sox

Is not bathing during the World Series some sort of quaint Boston tradition?

I don’t know if it’s any kind of a tradition, but it sure is funny.

Superstitions run rampant in sports, especially, for some reason, baseball. For some people, once they or their team wins, they feel they have to keep wearing their lucky cap, or their same pair of socks. For these guys, they felt they had to not shower as long as the Red Sox kept winning. The Red Sox continued to win; ergo, the family photo wound up being a stinker.

I knew there was a reason I haven’t been back to Fenway since ‘49

There’s a long standing tradition around here that you don’t shave as long as your team is in the playoffs (if you’re into hockey.)

See this rather amusing Molsen’s ad for an idea of how entrenched this is in Canadian lore: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=dIA8erVtcio :)

Granted, it usually applies more to guys… but what the hey. :)

If you go to see a baseball game live, watch the players, especially the pitchers as they go on and off the field. There are several pitchers who refuse to step on the foul line as they cross it, sone players will tap their bat on the plate a certain number of times, and some will step on the bases a certain number of times in a certain way. Here in Cleveland, for many years, we had Mike Hargrove at first, whose ritual before every pitch was so complex they called him “The Human Rain Delay.”
