Governors and Sex (Updated)

New Jersey might exist in New York’s shadow in many ways, but never — never — when it comes to political scandal: Today, even as David Paterson was being sworn in as New York governor to replace Eliot (Client #9) Spitzer, the news out of New Jersey is that Theodore Pedersen, a former aide to former New Jersey governor Jim (”I am a gay American”) McGreevey says that up until McGreevey’s 2001 election as governor, he had “three-way sex” with Jim and his wife Dina (both before and after their marriage). He had physical contact only with Dina, but Jim was present and “interested.” This of course contradicts Dina’s claim, both in her book Silent Partner and in her divorce testimony, that she had no idea Jim was anything other than your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill heterosexual.

Okay, who really cares? What Pedersen and the McGreeveys did or didn’t do to and with one another doesn’t matter in the least.

This is what does:

Pedersen told his story Sunday to both the Newark (NJ) Star Ledger and the New York Post, and the story was picked up by other area media. As far as the public is concerned, this is now part of the already-sordid McGreevey story. But there’s no evidence of any of this, and nobody to corroborate it. Pedersen could be nothing more than a former friend and former aide who wanted 15 minutes of fame he hadn’t even earned, and the Star Ledger and Post were only too eager to hand it to him.

Update: Jim McGreevey has confirmed Pedersen’s claim that Pedersen had had sex with Dina while we watched, and Pedersen had watched Jim and Dina having sex. Keep in mind that a Dina sues Jim in what was already an ugly divorce case, only one side benefits if Dina can’t portray herself as an innocent and shocked victim.

Also today, in an effort not to be outdone by his Garden State counterparts,  incoming New York governor David Paterson and his wife revealed that they too had had extra-marital affairs.
