Albert Einstein and other scientists whose work led to the creation of atomic bombs were highly intelligent. Arlo is referring to them, rather than the idiots who tested the bombs in the atmospehre.

I think he’s saying that while he might have been dumb to *eat* radioactive snow, it was dumber still to make the snow radioactive in the first place… and that was done by “the world’s greatest minds”!

Mmm, nuclear snow cones…
Of course these days I wouldn’t eat the snow that falls within 100 miles of a big city or factory. The snow cleans the air, so Lord knows what in it these days.

Richard: we posted at almost the same instant! And I agree with you, as a matter of personal opinion: the people who decided to do atmospheric tests (after the first one) were hardly the greatest minds on the planet, including most of the physicists who worked on the A- and H-bomb. Never the less, I think that is who Arlo is implacating.

The best and brightest physicists of the time worked on the development of nuclear technology. I saw the statement as an sadly ironic comment that a mind, no matter how intellectually formidable, cannot be cosidered great when it turns its attention to destroying humanity and the environment, rather than focus on more positive pursuits.

I’m with solarrhino, in your first response. However, the panel I don’t get is the one in the top right. Why isn’t it cool to throw a snowball in a snowstorm? they hadn’t yet had the “radioactive” discussion…and it’s not like Arlo threw two snowballs to give his son “snow boobs”. So, what’s not cool?

Gene considers himself “too old” for a childish thing like a snowball fight, and is annoyed at his dad for not recognizing the fact.

Mark’s right about Gene being too old, too cool for a snowball fight.
At least Arlo didn’t hit his head…

Aha! I get it!
Arlo STILL doesn’t realize it was stupid to eat the snow!
When Gene points out how dumb it was, Arlo assumes he’s talking about putting it there in the first place, not eating it! What harm could there be in eating radioactive snow?

The part I don’t get is Arlo’s hair. Why is his hair styled to look like an elderly aunt’s?

How old is this strip?
Cidu Bill Mar 7th 2008 at 06:48 pm 12
It was e-mailed to me, so I’m not sure how old it is. Based on Gene’s age, though, I’d say fairly old.

The copyright date appears to be 1994.

His hair is pretty foppish.

I saw this on Yahoo News just the other day:
