    maybe the artist had little time to come up with a joke and was in “crunch” mode

    Seriously though folks, if someones stomach is very large, it will in fact cover their laps. Dieting and exercise will reveal the laptop. Though no one could ever accuse Jeri of having a large stomach
    OR…..

    Maybe she isn’t doing crunches at all, but leg raises to tone her thighs — that would indeed produce a new laptop

    In this context a “lap top” is related to a “muffin top.” A muffin top is the roll of flesh that sticks out over the top of tight, low-cut pants and is exposed when slightly chunky young ladies wear cropped-tops. Well, here we see an older woman and, insead of having a muffin top, which spills of over the top of her jeands, she has a “lap top”, a massive roll of flesh that spills onto her lap, filling it up whenever she sits down. I am balanceing my laptop computer on my thigh due to just such a lack of lap top.

    It’s the mother who is exercising. Jeri has long yellow hair. The gold-colored hair is the mother. You can see the whole family in the first panel of the cartoon under “Separate Newspapers, Please”.

    Oops — looks like you folks are right — I think of Tess with black hair because that is the way she drawn in the dailies (I think)

    I had no clue based on the drawing whether this was Tess or Jeri — but I figured it had to be Tess because why would Grandma be calling to speak to Jeri?

    OK, on a different note, I cannot look at this particular strip without being creeped out by Teena’s beady green eyes in the second inset panel. They just look inhuman.

    Tess is wider, with larger breasts and honey-brown hair. Jeri is thin as a pencil with small breasts and bright yellow hair.
