Garfield is saying that he is against Jon, and he is doing such a good job being against Jon that he does not need the help of the rest of the world. Which doesn’t really make any damned sense, because Garfield often tried to help Jon - but I think that’s what he is getting at.

Kind of like the dynamics in a family - we can hate each other, all you other people had better be nice!

Yes, i agree with Richard. Except that it DOES make sense, because Garfield is, well, a cat.

Like siblings. They beat each other up and fight a lot, but lord help the bully at school who picks on the little guy, all his brothers and sisters will beat up the bully.

Or: Garfield is making a metajoke. Jon is setting up the world’s easiest joke with such a straight line, and Garfield anticipates that the reader has already supplied the punch line.

Garfield has had it. After years of being the star of a thoroughly unfunny comic strip, John’s word awakens him to the reality that the strip sucks and he walks out. His “I don’t need any help” is his way of saying he’s financially able to make it on his own, thanks to the years of merchendising. It should be interested to see what he will do now that he has left.

I agree with Jon88. Garfield decided the punchline is so easy he doesn’t even need to say it, and would appreciate if we do the same.

No, no, no. If that was it, Jon and Wally, then what’s the punchline?

    Richard has it.

Powers: If you and Richard are right, then it’s a lame and simplistic joke (I understand, of course, that you’re not saying it’s a *good* joke). I’d like to think that even Garfield, with its history of lame and simplistic jokes, is capable of occasional moments of cleverness.

Any punchline directly responding to the 1st panel setup would be too obvious to be funny, including the punchline Richard proposes (and doesn’t like). Jon’s metajoke, acknowledgment of punchline obviousness, is much more satisfying.

Meaning Jon88’s metajoke, not the character Jon’s metajoke.
