January 28 LOL Collection
Cidu Bill on Jan 28th 2008
Okay, I know it’s only January, but this one might be my “Lol of the Year”:
Nicole sent this to me as an Arlo Page candidate, but I voted it lol status:
Another lol that borders on Arlo territory — though I’m beginning to think that sufficiently creepy comics should start getting a Lio tag:
Keera Ann Fox:
Filed in Arlo Page, Bill Bickel, Dave Coverly, Ewww, F-Minus, For Better or For Worse, Frazz, Jef Mallet, Leigh Rubin, Lio, Lynn Johnston, Rubes, Snow White, Speed Bump, Tony Carrillo, comic strips, comics, comics that made us laugh out loud, humor, lol | 17 responses so far

Okay, I had to look it up, and I’m hoping I’m not the only one:
Charles Adams: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Addams
And the portion of his work pertinent to understanding the “Frazz” cartoon: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/03/books/chapters/1203-1st-davis.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
Hope I’m not the only one that had to do a little Googling.

Thank you, Ploughman! Nice to see the actual cartoon that Mallet was referring to.

It must be a good comic if I had to look it up and still laugh at it

When I had overstayed my welcome reading the comics at the Montrose Spa I would wander down Mass. Ave to the Square and peruse the Chas. Addams collections in the COOP book
department. Addams, G.Wilson, and Larsen owned the genre.

I also LOLed at Frazz. I live Addams and that is one of my favorites of his (along with the spring cleaning in the attic armiour.)

Was Charles Addams the first to do this ? — I remember this joke in many of the old loony toons cartoons I used to watch in my ill spent youth

I’d wager Addams was the first to show just the tracks with no explanation, and somebody reacting to it.

Regarding the LOL with a side of Ewww: The Far Side did it first, and IMO, better. It showed a man who’d just taken a bite out of his sandwich (with a jar of jelly open nearby), with a foot poised to stomp on a bug. The bug pleaded, “Please don’t squash me! I’ve got a wife waiting at home and ten thousand eggs laid in the jelly!”

I knew who Charles Addams was, but it took me a long time to see the snowboard tracks going around the tree.

Nicole - a youth spent on Looney Tunes is never ill-spent!
Scooby-Doo, yes. Looney Tunes, no.

Hands down, Mallett wins top LOLs for the YEAR. That was inspired.

Elly is showing some seriously repressed resentment. It’s hard not to interpret this passive-aggression in light of the upheaval in Johnston’s own life.
Cidu Bill Jan 29th 2008 at 10:21 pm 13
But it seems to me, Tom, that Elly’s the one being shown in a bad light here, with John the victim. I’d expect the opposite, if Johnston’s divorce were a factor here.

I’m surprized that no one noticed that the sandwich cartoon was almost an exact copy of a “Far Side” cartoon.

BTW Bill — Arlo!! and LOL’s are not mutually exclusive
CIDU Bill Jan 31st 2008 at 09:11 pm 16
Of course they aren’t, Nicole. The big difference is that when you read a comic that’s both a lol and an Arlo, you not only laugh, but milk shoots out your nose.
Nicole Feb 1st 2008 at 08:58 pm 17
“but milk shoots out your nose”
Anything I might say about this would certainly end up on the Arlo page
